Question:
What should I consider in selecting blades?
MR.
HARRIS:
The type, shape and condition of material to be cut define the
type of blade to be used. Shop owners should consider whether the
material is solid bar, tube, structural, whether it is bundled or not,
and what type of surface finish the material has. Scale, rust and slag
can create difficult cutting problems.
Carbon
blades, both hardback and flexback, cannot be generally recommended
for production cutting because the blades have poor resistance to heat
and abrasion. However, certain applications may exist where a hardened
carbon blade may be used for cost-effectiveness.
Bimetal
blades, which comprise the vast majority of blades in use today, come
in many configurations and generally consist of a tool steel (M30,
M42, etc.) electron welded beam welded to a tough backer material.
They have the greatest versatility and use in the metal sawing
business
