Question:
What has one thousand, two hundred, and sixty teeth and is 60
feet long?
It’s
the blade that goes on HE&M Saw’s latest 80-inch band saw.
This monster, designated the DC-8080, has band wheels that are
84 inches in diameter. It’s
higher than a two-story building, not quite as fast as a speeding
bullet, and can cut a locomotive in half.
Well
. . . a small locomotive.
So just what can you cut in this machine?
Anything you want. Armed with a 3.125” blade and a 25 HP band motor, the
DC-8080 is the largest band saw HE&M Saw has manufactured. So far.
It
doesn’t have a standard feed table.
It has a table mounted on railroad tracks.
Material to be cut is placed on a motorized “railcar” that
rolls beneath the saw. Two huge hydraulic vises are combined with two hydraulically
operated guide arms on the DC-8080.
The
double-column saw incorporates a unique combination of hydraulic lift
cylinders with a variable frequency driven double ballscrew drive for
extremely accurate cutting rate speeds that will optimize blade life
and cut accuracy.
The
Computer Controlled Traverse System allows the operator to input the
desired cutting rate in square inches per minute.
During the cut, the operator can increase or decrease the
cutting rate at any time.
