THEY
CALL HIM MISTER HEM
First
Process Steel is a Tulsa, OK job shop that takes special care
of its prize “employee,” a HEM Saw H90A that everyone refers
to as, “Mister HEM.”
They name all of their machines, like “Mega-Max,” a
1300-ton bending machine they built to bend metals of up to
56-feet long. There’s “Baby Shear” that shears up to ¼”
thick steel and “Big Guy” that bends material up to 5/8”
thick.
What
makes Mr. HEM special is the fact that “He paid for himself
after only the second or third job,” according to Production
Manger, Curt Newton. “That’s a faster payoff than any other
machine in the shop,” gleamed Newton. They like Mr. HEM
because once they get him started he works alone, cutting
primarily stainless steel, (including $10,000 pipes that must be
cut right from start to finish), parts for heat exchangers,
truck trailers, and winch bases for military tanks. They don’t
have to constantly measure parts or change blades as often as
they did with a now-retired Wells Saw. He gets respect from other
employees. They all take turns keeping him clean.
Curt’s
brother, president and owner Dan Newton, likes the H90A’s
outstanding profit performance. According to Dan, “He never
takes a vacation, never goes on break, never needs supervision
and never asks for a raise.
In fact, he’s now paying me to work!”
Needless to say, Mr. HEM is their best, and favorite
‘employee’. Curt says they’re going to have a contest to
draw the best face for him.
